History Of WNZF
In 2007, Lynn Hawkins of DeLand-based Flag Radio, Inc. sold the construction permit of WAYI-AM 1550 to Flagler County Broadcasting, LLC (James E. Martin, Gary S. Smithwick, William G. Brown, Clifton G. Moor). In May of 2008 the City of Bunnell Planning and Zoning Committee unanimously approved a site plan for Flagler county’s first full service commercial radio station. WNZF Radio will broadcast on 1550 am with 8,700 watts on the AM band and simulcasting on 106.3 FM.  The format, according to station officials will be 24 hours of news, talk and information with strong emphasis on Flagler county events. The station will have a news-talk format emphasizing local news, weather and  emergency information. The company has requested the call letters WNZF , which stands for News-Flagler. Martin said the lower nighttime coverage is something the company hopes to improve as soon as possible. He said another AM station in Miami operates at the same frequency and is subject to nighttime jamming from Cuba. "There is a Cuban-American station on 1550 in Miami which we believe must have provoked the jamming from Cuba," he said. "It is a bizarre relic from the days when the Soviet Union used to jam the Voice of America and Radio Free Europe." Flagler Broadcasting's association with InterMart Broadcasting brings it decades of experience in building and operating radio stations throughout the Southeast, including stations in Atlanta, St. Augustine, Miami, Orlando, Palm Beach, Naples and Fort Myers. In addition to Martin, who has been involved in the construction and management of 22 radio stations, company officials include Gary S. Smithwick, a communications attorney who has operated a radio station in North Carolina. Clifton G. Moor and William G. Brown are also on the management team and will head up the engineering part of the new station. The station will be located at City Plaza on Moody Boulevard near the new Town Center development.
