WGNE History
WGNE began, as WRMF back in 1968, on the 98.3 frequency with 3,000 watts of power in Titusville. Several different call letter combinations and formats were tried through the years. With Orlando FM stations putting city grade signals into Titusville, things proved to be very difficult. In 1989, the FCC approved an upgrade to 50,000 watts if they would change frequencies to 98.1. The call letters were changed to WGNE, which stood for the "Great Ninety Eight", the format would go from Adult Pop to Country and the studios would be moved to Daytona Beach, which would also become their target market.
