WDLF History
1942-DeLand's first radio station (WDLF-AM 1490) was built by a Deland Naval Air Station veteran, Francis Lauren Mickle. Jim Walter, one of the first personnel stationed at the Deland Naval Air Station, still produces partially completed housing, (most likely the way he found his barracks when he moved into the fledgling training station). Spruce Creek airfield and the New Smyrna airport are direct results of the DeLand Naval Air Station. The landing of the Navy in DeLand in 1942 has forever changed the nature of DeLand and Volusia County.
