Erika
Roman Dies In Single Car Crash
5-2-09
A rollover crash has claimed the life of WPYO-FM
95.3's Erica Roman.
Erika, also known as "Chula", was a co-host and producer on the “Lil Shawn and Obie
Morning Show.” The accident happened on Florida's Turnpike
just north of Okeechobee Road in St. Lucie County. The Florida Highway
Patrol said Roman
swerved to avoid a boat lounge chair that was in her lane. She
overcorrected and her car flipped several times before coming to a
rest upside down in a deep canal. A truck driver Christopher
Johnson of Auburndale, saw Roman lose control. He dove into the deep,
murky water. Johnson and an FHP Trooper tried to break the window, then
hooked the car up to chains and pulled it out. The Trooper performed
CPR before paramedics rushed her to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center.
Roman was pronounced dead at the hospital. Johnson sustained an
injury in
the water and had to get 13 staples on the top of his foot. Troopers are
looking for the person who lost the chair. That person could face
criminal charges. In Memory

Shannon
Burke Arrested 5-2-09
WTKS-FM
104.1 mid-day
host Shannon Burke
was arrested on Thursday night and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and animal cruelty.
Deputies said the handgun discharged, but did not specify if the shooting was intentional. The bullet went through the dog's leg and hit Burke's wife, Catherine Burke, in the head.
He told deputies he became angry with the pet late Thursday and was waving a firearm that he thought was not loaded, Sheriff's spokeswoman Kim Cannaday said.
Burke is still on probation for an alcohol-related reckless driving charge in Orange County and a judge has issued a warrant for his arrest on a violation of probation connected to that charge, which carries no bond. Burke could be transferred to Orange County custody
and he'd have to appear before an Orange County judge before that county could release him.

Happy
Birthday WDBO
5-21-09
It began on May 24, 1924 as a physics class project. In
May, E.F. Wineberg, a Rollins
College math, physics and engineering professor, launched a
50-watt radio station in a small wooden building on the Winter Park campus. The
first night's programming - less than an hour - included talks by college
officials, a violin solo and a performance by the men's glee club, according to
the Rollins newspaper that week. It was the first radio station in Orange County
and only the third in the state of Florida. WDBO
operated at 1250 on the dial with 50 watts of power for thirty hours a week. The
station has been serving Central Florida for 85 years on
Sunday.
